Hannah Parrett

Ohio State Department of Art graduate student and Ann Hamilton Studio graduate assistant Hannah Parrett provides insight into the processes used to create when an object reaches for your hand, featured in the exhibition HERE.

Using an early flatbed scanner with a shallow depth of field for several of her recent series, Ann Hamilton transforms objects into atmospheric images in which form and material come in and out of focus. In the images of when an object reaches for your hand—which feature domestic items, biological specimens, and antique articles of clothing from Ohio State collections—scale is elusive, and the gestural quality of the imaging process often makes the scans feel like drawings. This gallery talk will focus on the importance of unexpected outcomes in Hamilton’s process and also touch on the year of research spent visiting various collections and archives at Ohio State and elsewhere.

More about the speaker

Now in her third year as a graduate student with a painting and drawing focus in Ohio State’s Department of Art, Parrett has exhibited in multiple group shows including the Fergus Scholarship Exhibition (2019) and the Hopkins Hall Summer Series (2018). She recently received the Project Narrative Small Grant to support research for her thesis in spring 2020. Hannah’s current artwork explores the contingencies of space and time through relationships of color in painted armatures, dyed and painted fabric, and steel-rod constructions.
